A Brief History Of Troop 8. 60th Court Of Honor. May 16th, 2004.
Troop 8 (Tribe #8) was founded by the Rotary Club in 1943 to serve the youth of Old East Petaluma. Adolph Calegari, then the youngest member of the Rotary was told, “You’re going to be the Scoutmaster.” As Mr. Calegari recalls, “I had no experience with scouting!” But with scout manual in hand, and help from fellow Rotarians Troop 8 was under way.
Meetings were held each Friday evening in the basement of the Calegari family home on Wilson Street. Sessions often ended with impromptu (but supervised) boxing matches, so that the boys could work off their excess energy. (Troop 8 meetings now often end with a boisterous variation of dodge ball). Due to World War II and gas rationing, troop outings stayed close to home, including hikes up Sonoma Mountain and overnights at local ranches. Calegari still remembers their first meals, cooked over an open fire: “burned stew and burned potatoes!” Claude Grey, Peter Piazza, Clyde Rowan, Arnold Buletti and Ron Lucchesi were the first registered members. Jimmy Pluth was the first Eagle Scout, in 1948.
Since 1943 Troop 8 has had a succession of dynamic and dedicated leaders, and an average troop size of 20-30 scouts. By 2012, 93 young men have earned the rank of Eagle Scout.
